Las Palmas

Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and is located in the north east of the island.

Las Palmas was founded in 1478 and as such has an abundance of culture and heritage. In fact the oldest section of town, Vegueta, was in 1990 named as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

These days Las Palmas is a thriving city full of tourism and European flavour and boasts three great beaches as well as some interesting museums.

Las Palmas is also famous for being the city in which both Canarian wrestling (Lucha) and Canarian lateen sailing originated.

The most populous city in the Canary Islands and the political capital (along with Santa Cruz) of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, Las Palmas is also the ninth largest city in all of Spain. "Real de Las Palmas" was originally founded by Juan Rejón on June 24, 1478. In 1492, Christopher Columbus stopped by the Canary Islands - including Las Palmas - on his way to the Americas. Over the years, the port city played a big part in the shaping of world affairs in the area - especially when the Suez Canal was shut down in the late 20th century. Las Palmas is the sister city of San Antonio, Texas, but people from cities all over the globe have traveled to the port city of Las Palmas for business and pleasure both. These days, it is still a very popular tourist destination in the area.
